Resources: Getting a Web Address for Your Business

Even if you aren't ready to build a site, waiting to purchase a domain name will decrease the likelihood that your first choice of name will be available later.
Here's a bit about what you need to do to get your domain name. You don't have to know anything about setting up websites to take this first step.

It's easy and inexpensive to make sure your preferred web address is available. For anywhere from $9-$35 per year you can purchase a domain name for your business. All you need is a credit card.

What is a domain name?

Some Recommended Sites for Purchasing A Domain Name:
Searching for Your Domain Name
Any domain name site will allow you to search databases which hold the names of all urls already owned by someone. You enter your desired name and it will tell you if it is already taken and, if so, offer you some alternative names or domain extensions (e.g., ".com" might not be available but ".net" might be). Once you have chosen a domain name suitable for your business*, your name and address will be listed as the domain owner unless you choose to purchase a privacy service. The privacy service of the domain name company will then use their information for the public profile of your domain. This is usually available for a small annual fee.

Don't Delay!

*If you don't get the exact name you wanted and can't decide amongst some alternatives, buy several names now to give yourself time to consider them further. Then for those you don't want for the long term, just let them expire at the end of the year.
